Recent years have seen remarkable progress in the development of miniature laboratories ("labs on chips"). This research field has been stimulated by the ability to carry out rapid, controllable and highly reproducible experiments on very small scales and in a highly parallelized manner.

"Labs on chips" defined new operational paradigms and paved the way for discoveries to be done in the most time-efficient and labour-saving way. In my lecture, I will show how research conducted in "labs on chips" has led to high value materials, new knowledge about the changes occurring in the environment and in cell biology, and efficient tools for medical diagnostics.

Dr. Christakis received his B.S. from Yale University in 1984, M.D. from Harvard Medical School and M.P.H. from the Harvard School of Public Health in 1989, and Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1995. He is an internist and social scientist who conducts research on social factors (such as small and large social networks) that affect health, health care, and longevity. He is the co-author of Connected: The Surprising Power of Our Social Networks and How They Shape Our Lives. He is 2006 Fellow of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, and is on the 2009 Time magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people in the world.

Key to Newcomer Success Is To Become “More Canadian”

Toronto, January 14, 2011 – Internationally Educated Professionals (IEPs) are more likely to successfully integrate into the local workforce if they focus on becoming "more Canadian." That’s the finding of a new study commissioned by the Progress Career Planning Institute (PCPI).

"We’re seeing more internationally trained professionals doing well in their chosen fields," said Silma H Roddau, President of PCPI. "They’re successful because they know how important it is to understand the Canadian culture to effectively communicate."

While most research studies focus on the experience of Internationally Educated Professionals entering the Canadian workforce, the study "Winning Strategies for IEPs Success in the Workplace: Employers’ and IEPs’ Perspectives" goes beyond this phase by exploring the integration of Internationally Educated Professionals into the Canadian workforce.

The study, which surveyed 168 Internationally Educated Professionals and 20 Toronto region employers from small, medium and large organizations within the public, private and non-profit sectors, found that the following strategies have helped Internationally Educated Professionals succeed in the workplace:
Learning to become "more Canadian" by investing in improving language and communication skills
Mentoring and coaching by employers to help IEPs understand the workplace and Canadian culture
Networking with other professionals within and outside the workforce to better understand the workplace
The research is based on case studies of Internationally Educated Professionals including Dr. Nava Israel, a dietician and educator from Israel who has designed programs for Internationally Educated Professionals at Ryerson University.

"The Israeli style of communications is very blunt and simply did not work here," said Isreal. "I had to learn to become ‘more Canadian’ in the way I communicated, and it made all the difference." Israel, is one of several Internationally Educated Professionals who shared their stories of hard work, perseverance and success during the conference.

The study was released at the 8th Annual Internationally Educated Professionals Conference hosted by PCPI. The conference is designed to help Internationally Educated Professionals market themselves to prospective employers. This is the largest networking event of its kind in Canada – bringing together over 1,000 Internationally Educated Professionals, employers from over 100 countries and employment experts to share their successes and strategies in integrating Internationally Educated Professionals into Canada’s workforce.

In Toronto, roughly half of the city’s residents were born outside Canada.

"Toronto is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the world," said Michael Williams, General Manager, Economic Development, Culture and Tourism, for the City of Toronto. "That’s a huge advantage for Toronto, allowing local businesses to connect with every part of the world."

The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program provides eligible individuals with free help in completing their tax returns.

Delivered by: Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)

Participants must meet the following criteria:

be unable to complete their income tax and benefit return by themselves
be unable to pay for assistance
other criteria may apply

Volunteers do not complete income tax and benefit returns for deceased persons, bankrupt individuals, or individuals who have capital gains or losses, employment expenses, or business or rental income and expenses.
The Clinics are offered between February and April of each year in various locations across Canada.

Description & Services

Description: Prepares basic income tax returns for individuals with low income

Service Details: Volunteers prepare basic income tax returns enabling individuals to file for benefits they otherwise would not receive
* Volunteers should have experience in preparing basic tax returns
* A one day training session is provided each year to volunteers

Dates: Most activity is during the tax filing season from March to the end of April.

Eligibility: Individuals with low incomes and the inability to complete their own return
* Inability to pay for assistance
* Net Income of less than $30,000 for a couple
* Have a simple tax return

Fees: Free; Organizations that offer this free service may have a donation box to assist in covering costs of supplies or to make a charitable donation.

The Canada Revenue Agency offers, through its Community Volunteer Income Tax Program, free volunteer tax training sessions to community organizations and individuals and provides volunteers with a kit of handy reference material. On behalf of the Mennonite New Life Centre and our Newcomer Advocacy Committee, we would like to invite you to participate in our community forum "Refusing to Settle for Less: Newcomer Policy Recommendations to Overcome Poverty". This forum will be held on Saturday March 27th, 2010 from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm in our meeting space at 1774 Queen Street East.

As you know, the Mennonite New Life Centre is a vibrant, multicultural settlement agency for newcomers, with a vision for a city and province where people from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds participate fully in the social, economic and political life of Toronto and Ontario.

During the forum, we hope to engage a wide variety of stakeholders in dialogue regarding newcomer employment challenges and policy proposals, and to identify new ways of working together so that newcomers might contribute their skills and their ideas to this country. To facilitate this dialogue and action planning, we are planning four roundtable discussions around the themes of access to employment and political voice for newcomers:
Employment Equity Legislation: a proposal to ensure equitable representation of diverse groups in the workplace.
Paid Internships: an employer incentive strategy.
Upcoming Municipal and Provincial Elections: opportunities and challenges for newcomer civic participation.
Community organizing experiences: learning from grassroots newcomer initiatives
Your participation is key to the success of this forum. We look forward to hearing your experiences, ideas and proposals for improving access to fair and meaningful employment for newcomers and building strong and inclusive communities where immigrants and refugees participate fully in civic life. Soap Making Project

We've spent one day in our lives to making our own soaps. Exploring the art of handmade soap making, we went through several steps to get the soap ready:

Step 1: Soap Making Project: Our equipment, ingredients and understanding of the golden rules of soap making at home
(digital kitchen balance scale, plastic and metal containers, oils, sodium hydroxide, wooden stick, hand mixer, small saucepan, forms, fragrances, rubber gloves)

Step 2-1: Soap Making Project: Oil mix weighting
(coconut oil, olive oil, grape seed oil, sesame oil and whatever you want to add)

Step2-2: Soap Making Project: Oil mix weighting
(use 10% more oil mix solution than it needs for the reaction)

Step 3: Soap Making Project: Preparing sodium hydroxide solution
(adding sodium hydroxide to water, placing a plastic container in snow to cool it down)

Step4: Soap Making Project: Melting oil mix in a water bath ( small saucepan)

Step 5-1: Soap Making Project: Combining oil mix with sodium hydroxide solution

Step 5-2: Soap Making Project: Mixing soap with a wooden stick

Step 5-3: Soap Making Project: Step 5-3 Mixing soap with a hand mixer
( may add fragrance and additional ingredients)

Step 6: Soap Making Project: Preparation of soap making forms

Step 7: Soap Making Project: Soap forming time to pouring the mixture into the forms

Step 8: Soap Making Project: Soap should stay in forms from 7 to 10 days

Is light a wave or a particle? After many centuries of debate, involving giants as Newton, Hughyens, Young, Fresnel, Maxwell, Einstein, the final answer of quantum mechanics is: “light is both a wave and a particle”.

Wave-particle duality is at the root of the quantum revolution initiated at the beginning of the 20th century, but explaining it is a difficult challenge. Most textbooks on quantum physics start with a description of an “experiment” to demonstrate it - an experiment that was not actually realized with photons before 1985. An even more fascinating version of that “thought experiment” – the “delayed-choice experiment” proposed by J.A. Wheeler - has recently been turned into a real experiment as well. We will present that experiment, which, in the words of Richard Feynman, stresses one of the big "quantum mysteries."

I am sure there has been much discussion on the topic "How Women can fill the gap in the field of trades". Most definitely, industry forecasters acknowledge the current and ever growing the trade shortage. And, yes, it has been mentioned many times that more than half of Ontario’s skilled trades people will retire in the next 5 years and 4 out of every 10 businesses that depend on skilled trades are expected to face a labour shortage.

So, I ask the question: "Are you a woman looking at future jobs in trades?" Then, I would recommend you to research such occupations that embrace "the green economy". There is now a strong movement toward creating environmentally sustainable energy sources. With our current global financial crisis, it is even more crucial to be green! The colour "green" will pave the way for plentiful future jobs in trades.

For example, in the field of trades, the green movement will open up a lot of jobs for electricians, iron and steel workers, construction workers, and sheet metal workers. Construction workers in our greening economy will be able to get jobs retrofitting homes to make them more efficient. The biggest support for renovation and revitalization of construction jobs is the federal government offering a rebate for renovation, particularly with the emphasis on eco-retrofitters i.e. bumping up insulation, new tankless water heaters, etc… These two initiatives will offer more federal and provincial incentives for people to "go green".

Yes, indeed, money spent on retrofitting homes, and buildings will be a major economic driver for job development in the green economy. Some of the future plans for this green movement will include renewable energy tariffs, renewable energy goals for utilities /targets and the restrictions, and eventually the dissemination of new carbon emitting projects. All of these key objectives will push the government to develop more wind, solar and geothermal technology.

"Solar", "wind" and "sustainable energy solutions" are the hot words for the 21st century. As such, jobs in trades and professions will increase for water treatment; installation of solar energy systems i.e. installation of solar water heaters, reforestation, and cleaning up contaminated sites. Yes, indeed, the future of women in trades and in the green economy looks favorable.

I don't normally condone the lionising of crackers; it only encourages the little pests. (It's like calling graffiti vandals "artists".) Allowing a major exploit the foundation of a security career also strikes me as a perverse incentive. However, a suitably public recantation and credible evidence of reform should be accepted, so I was prepared to listen to the keynote dialogue between Craig Silverman and Michael Calce (Mafiaboy) at IT-360.

Like Torvalds, Calce was introduced to computers extremely young, and began to explore their internals very thoroughly. Unlike Linus, he had the misfortune to fall in with the wrong "community".

The famous exploit that took down Amazon and Yahoo was devised as a weapon for use in juvenile gang warfare on the Internet, but the damage it caused was not so much deliberately anti-social behaviour, more an example of "Sorcerer's Apprentice Syndrome". Like Robert Morris' 1988 worm, a combination of misapplied (and inadequately tested) skill and adolescent lack of foresight caused damage way beyond its instigator's intentions, and promptly terrified him with its consequences.

Although he still wants to be acknowledged for the technical skill, knowledge, and (perverse) creativity he clearly displayed, Calce seems to have acquired a moral compass as a result of his experiences, and aims to use those attributes in a positive way. What he had to say about the evolution of the Internet since 1998 wasn't really news to anyone who's been watching. (There was some novelty in his suggestion that the fuss over Conficker and April 1. was a diversionary tactic to conceal some other timing or target.)

The Dark Side has learned, and morphed from pointless and largely inconsequential, (to anyone else), tribal squabbling, to serious, financially-motivated crime, with large potential rewards. The threats are greatly enhanced by the multiplication of the bandwidth available to individuals for attacks like DDoS.

The forces of good, on the other hand, are still stuck with an architecture designed for a basically trustworthy environment. In particular, BIND and named are fundamentally broken. Unlike the bad guys, the commercial world appears not to have learnt very much, because it keeps enabling the same old exploits, (buffer overflows, memory corruption, &c), and enabling new ones (XSS &c.).

I'll attribute to youthful naivety his proposed solution of government-level certification of programs. Even if it were possible to restrict the code visible to the Internet, the demonstrated ineptness of government and law-enforcement in networking matters makes any idea of officially-inspired solutions a bad joke. (That's my opinion, not Calce's.)

Even if there were no world-class insights revealed, the event was sufficiently interesting that I might take the book out of the Library.

Toronto Small Business Forum 2008: Building A Green Foundation For the Future

The emergence of "green marketing", and "green businesses and enterprise” was a prevalent theme for this year’s Forum. It seems that "green" is now the primary foundation colour for building any current and future successful business venture.

On October 20th, 2008, I attended the Toronto Small Business Forum 2008 at the Delta Chelsea Hotel.

As usual, it featured a diverse perspective in its presentations, seminars, round table discussions, and break out seminars by various successful entrepreneurs and industry experts.

Renowned key note speakers and their presentations, such as Laurie Simmonds' "Green Enterprise"- President of Green Living Enterprises, and "Lessons Learned from Building a Green Business" by Tom Heintzman - President of Bullfrog Power, stressed the global concern for environmental issues and eco-friendly products.

Also, impressive was the tremendous wealth of resources available for those just starting their business and for the seasoned entrepreneur as well. These were well-displayed in the small business trade show hosting 50 exhibitors, including government agencies, educational institutions, business associations, and companies providing a wide range of products targeted to entrepreneurs.

Particularly helpful was the networking session facilitated by the energetic Wendy Woods of Watershed Training Solutions. It offered a great opportunity to meet and greet so many wonderful people who can become vital connectors in growing anyone's small business.

The emergence of "green marketing", and "green businesses and enterprise" was a prevalent theme for this year's Forum. It seems that "green" is now the primary foundation colour for building any current and future successful business venture.

After enjoying this year's, I now look forward to the one in 2009 to see the new hot trends that will continue to emerge for us in the 21st century.

Raghavan received his PhD from Berkeley and is a Fellow of the ACM and of the IEEE. Prior to joining Yahoo, he was Chief Technology Officer at Verity; before that he held a number of technical and managerial positions at IBM Research.

Nayar co-directs the Columbia Vision and Graphics Center, and heads the Columbia Computer Vision Laboratory (CAVE), which is dedicated to the development of advanced computer vision systems. His research is focused on three areas: the creation of novel cameras, the design of physics-based models for vision, and the development of algorithms for scene understanding. His work is motivated by applications in the fields of digital imaging, computer graphics and robotics.

Mastering the art of change is essentially the embodiment of transformation of the spirit within.

Masters of change transform adverse situations and challenges into learning opportunities for growth and development, not only for themselves, but also for others. They essentially shape transformation through challenge!

Managing change is then the ability to look at life from a different kind of perspective. Life, according to masters of change, is a mosaic yet to be filled in with new experiences that they are about to embark upon.

But how do we open our minds to see the mosaic yet to be created and to transform the spirit within?
Leave the past in the past.
Forgive those who do not acknowledge the significance of the past and its accomplishments in your life and in the life of the company you work for. Don’t hold grudges.
Maintain an ongoing dialogue with all those involved in the change. This strategy will go a long way to creating synergy that will drive the change process for you and for others.
Keep a learning journal to record and track your progress.
Look at the experiences through the enthusiastic and passionate eyes of a child - now as a new wonder to behold - a puzzle to solve – even as a new challenge to energize you.
Have faith in yourself and others based on mutual respect for one another.
Use mind mapping techniques to draw out the concepts and feelings evoked by the process of change. For more information on mind mapping, you can read The Mind Map Book: How to Use Radiant Thinking to Maximize Your Brain's Untapped Potential by Tony Buzan and Barry Buzan ( 1996), Mind Mapping: Your Personal Guide to Exploring Creativity by Joyce Wycoff ( 1991 ), and Mind Maps in a Week by Steve Morris and Jane Smith. In fact, Tony Buzan has actually come out with his own software in 2007- go to: http://www.imindmap.com/ .
Seek a re-birth – a re-entry - into this new world you envision by writing out your vision statement for the company or your department. From there, develop your mission statement and evolving from this will be your SMART goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time-sensitive. You can shape this process by doing a flow chart or a pyramid chart to facilitate the development of a decisive action plan or even use something as simple as a collage of pictures depicting the various stages of development to achieve your vision. You can also make a collage of pictures from your own life and insert them into this one to personalize it even more for yourself.
Videotape yourself as you describe and act out the change process you are going through. Watch your posture and body language and observe them for changes and reflection, and take notes as you watch. This exercise will help create a self-awareness that will promote the learning process.
These techniques will help foster your intuition as a valid source of information and analysis, because they will enhance your ability to not only see the early signs for future developments but also to take appropriate action and get results.

Such techniques will also allow you the ability to see patterns in your own behavior and relationships within organizations that will ultimately facilitate the change process.

Web 2.0 creates a niche for a new semantic web agent to pick the best of the best of worldwide conference podcasting. What a great idea from a Bruno Giussani's article about a new trend in our digital life:

This burgeoning of conference podcasting worldwide suggests a few thoughts:

* One: great ideas and knowledge are now shared freely as never before, available for people to use and share: I've heard of teachers using talks as part of their syllabus; corporate managers burning them on CDs and giving them to their staff or using them during team retreats; etc.
* Two: all of those conferences seem to be doing it for the same reason: TED believes "in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and ultimately, the world"; Pop!Tech's Zolli (quote above) talks about "harnessing the power of visionary ideas" to "build a better world"; LIFT's goal is to "connect people (...) and propel their conversations into the broader world to improve life and work".
* Three: the multiplication of conference videos may open a niche for a meta-curator role, picking the best of the best.

We all know where the good-paying jobs are: In government, where 34,000 Ontario civil servants and employees, who work at Crown corporations, hospitals, municipalities, colleges and universities earn more than $100,000 a year.
That's up 24% from 2005.
Many of them earn twice that amount if they're lucky enough to work for hydro or the scandal-ridden Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp.
Meanwhile, many small businesses complain they can't find workers to fill job vacancies.
At the same time, immigrants with skills can't find jobs.

The management of nonprofit organizations is a complex and unique task, made all the more challenging by the resource limitations that many of the GTA's nonprofit organizations find themselves battling.
Five Good Ideas is a lunch and learn program where industry or issue experts discuss powerful yet practical ideas on key management issues facing nonprofit organizations. The sessions are most useful for management staff and board members at small and mid-sized nonprofits.
Each expert presents five practical yet strategic ideas and explores with the audience how these ideas can be translated into action. At the end of each session, participants self-organize in small groups and continue the discussion to generate the best and most relevant of all ideas. The "good ideas" are published on our website as a lasting resource tool for nonprofits.

Today, many active community leaders argue that no single sector – public, private or nonprofit – is capable of solving our modern day challenges on its own. A new dialogue is needed, and a more powerful focus on citizen involvement is required to collectively address these issues. Anil Patel will provocatively explore the role that volunteerism plays in the context of the ‘greater good’. Anil’s talk will unveil his newly coined concept of Citizenship 2.0, a more holistic approach to the challenges and opportunities relating to civic responsibility through the lens of volunteerism. He will present an interconnected core set of principles that focus on how to maximize a citizen’s contribution in the community over the long-term relative to their capacity to give.

TURNING OUT TO TALK YOUNG PHILANTHROPY AT THE FRINGE

Anil Patel, Director and Co-Founder of the Framework Foundation, an organization that advocates volunteerism through creative initiatives, suggested that giving doesn’t have to be an “either-or” choice. Donating time rather than money is a worthwhile compromise. For every $1 spent in traditional fundraising campaigns, only $2 is generated. For every $1 spent on volunteerism efforts, $7 in benefits is generated. By encouraging what Samir Khan of D-Code, a strategic marketing firm, calls the “participatory instinct,” both the donor and organization benefit.

До переезда в Канаду я 12 лет прожила в Израиле, где мой путь в специальности можно считать довольно успешным. Начав свою работу в Израиле с работы химика-аналитика в заводской лаборатории, я закончила его в статусе руководителя исследовательского проекта в частной компании.
Пройдя весь путь для получения статуса независимого эмигранта, за год до своей эмиграции я впервые побывала в Канаде – участвовала в научной конференции с докладом и навестила родных. Одной из основных целей этой поездки было принятие окончательного решения о второй эмиграции, которое далось мне нелегко. Одним из доводов «за» было ошибочное впечатление, что я смогу найти в Канаде работу, близкую к моей специальности. После переезда выяснилось, что одно дело – разговаривать с коллегами об общих проблемах в работе, и совсем другое – обращаться к ним в поисках работы.
Пришлось идти обычным эмигранским путем – составлять список групп и организаций, где можно было применить мой опыт, рассылать резюме, звонить, посещать ярмарки труда и курсы. Считая, что «я не королева – корона с головы не упадет», я была заранее согласна на начальную позицию, например, техника в химической лаборатории или ассистента учителя.

Скоро выяснилось, что кроме обычных эмигрантских проблем, к которым я была более или менее готова из опыта предыдущей эмиграции (хотя мы и называем ее репатриацией, но суть дела от этого мало меняется), в Канаде существуют и специфические.
Область, в которой я всю жизнь работала – исследование и разработка материалов на основе стекла и керамики – в Канаде не очень развита, существует всего несколько небольших групп, в основном, в университетах. Основные разработки и, соответственно, рабочие места – в соседней Америке.
Работа учителем в школе требует специальной лицензии. В колледже этого не требуется, но и критерии приема на работу строже.
Основной рынок труда в Канаде – «скрытый». Даже по опубликованным официальным данным, объявляются только 10 –15% свободных рабочих мест. На остальные находят людей путем так называемого «нетворкинга», то есть через сотрудников и знакомых. На некоторых фирмах даже существует практика платить сотруднику «бонус», если он привел или порекомендовал подходящего специалиста, и тот успешно прошел испытательный срок и остался работать на фирме.
Еще один барьер для специалиста-эмигранта – канадский опыт, вернее, его отсутствие. Без канадского опыта трудно усроиться на квалифицированную работу, а без работы нет опыта. То же самое и с рекомендациями. Обычно просят три рекомендации, естественно, предпочтительнее канадские. Поэтому очень распространена система «волонтерства» - добровольной работы без оплаты, за рекомендацию в течение трех-шести месяцев. Есть фирмы, которые специализируются на этом. Берут на работу специалистов-«волонтеров», периодически меняя их на других желающих получить рекомендацию. Причем «волонтерам» не делается никаких скидок по сравнению со штатными сотрудниками, скорее наоборот – им поручают работу, которую не стремятся выполнять обычные работники. А химику надо еще найти организацию, которая согласится платить за него профессиональную страховку на случай несчастного случая на работе. Правда, такую организацию найти вполне реально, это делают многие курсы и организации, помогающие новым эмигрантам до трех лет в стране.

Существуют также специальные курсы и программы, так называемые Со-Ор, основной задачей которых, наряду с обучением правильному написанию резюме и, сопроводительного письма и поведения на интервью, является поиск «волонтерских» мест и помощи в устройстве туда своих студентов.
Я тоже поучилась на таких курсах (Со-Ор программа колледжа Yorkdale), представила им список организаций, где я могла и хотела бы поработать волонтером в надежде на то, что после этого срока удастся «зацепиться» на рабочем месте. Никто из списка взять волонтера не пожелал. Руководители курса устроили на стажировку почти всех экономистов и бухгалтеров, но не химиков. И я не знакома ни с одним из студентов, кого бы оставили на работе после периода «волонтерства».
Следующим этапом была попытка поступить на курсы для иностранных специалистов при Сенека колледже. Привлекательным для меня в этой программе было то, что занятия на курсах вели преподаватели колледжа, и был шанс хотя бы познакомиться с коллегами. Но в процессе многоступегчатого собеседования, на последнем его этапе мы не сошлись во взглядах с дамой – выходцем (выходкой?) из Ирана. Ей очень не хотелось меня принимать, а мне расхотелось учиться на этой программе.
Последним «образовательным аккордом» в моей практике стали курсы «Age 45+». Их основной задачей, как мне показалось, было внушить студентам, что возраст 45+ имеет многочисленные достоинства по сравнению с более молодыми, и чем больше «плюс», тем больше достоинств. Убежденные в этом студенты, в свою очередь, должны довести эту мысль до потенциальных работодателей.
Если отвлечься от моего убеждения, что подобные курсы, кроме совершенствования в английском языке, мне лично ничего не дадут, учиться было интересно. Кроме обычных написания резюме, приемов разговора с работодателем и требований к внешнему виду, проводился достаточно серьезный психологический тест для выявления психологического типа и склонностей человека к выполнению определенного рода работы. Очевидно, что такой тест наиболее полезен молодым, только выбирабщим себе направление деятельности. Но его результаты могут служить хорошей подсказкой для тех, кто по какой-то причине хочет сменить профессию. К своему большому изумлению, я узнала, что все, чем я когда-либо занималась в жизни, вплоть до своих многочисленных хобби, соответствует моему психотипу. Поразмыслив, я поняла, что удивляться тут нечему: просто мне повезло, что я могла заниматься тем, что мне нравилось. Вот не подходит мне работать с людьми, например, в сфере обслуживания, но я и так испытывала страх перед такого рода деятельностью.
И еще очень интересно было увидеть себя в роли кинозвезды. С каждым из нас проводили пробное интервью, задавая самые каверзные вопросы, а процесс снимали на видео. Потом мы группой смотрели и обсуждали эти сюжеты, чтобы понять, что нужно исправить в своем поведении, начиная от манеры одеваться до прощальных слов благодарности.

В промежутках между этими интересными занятиями я иногда получала приглашения на интервью. Если рассматривать сам процесс не как последний шанс получить работу, то в нем есть много познавательного и иногда даже забавного.
Свой первый опыт в этой области я даже не могу назвать интервью. Послав резюме по объявлению, буквально на следующий день я услышала на автоответчике сообщение с просьбой перезвонить. Два последующих дня я разговаривала с автоответчиком компании. Стоило мне выйти из дома, как у меня на автоответчике появилась новая, но странная запись о том, что меня хотят пригласить на интервью, но ни даты, ни времени, ни адреса ... Снова звоню на автоответчик, оставляю сообщение, что я готова, с радостью, дома бываю во столько-то или прошу оставить сообщение с координатами. Через несколько дней – опять сообщение , и опять никакой конкретной информации. Встречаюсь с работниками кадров указанного колледжа, пытаюсь выяснить по фамилии и направлению деятельности, что это за исследовательская группа. Никто ничего не знает. На сайте колледжа такая группа тоже не указана. До сих пор не понимаю, что это было.
Обращения в университетские исследовательские группы успеха не принесло. Профессора, как правило, люди вежливые, на письма и звонки отвечали, советовали обратиться к коллегам в другой университет. Круг замкнулся.
Аналитические лаборатории, в основном, обслуживают производство. А химическое производство в Канаде сосредоточено в области фармацевтики и переработки нефти. Далекая от меня область. Нашлось несколько лабораторий по контролю строительных материалов и разработке методов исследования. Пишу, звоню, в одну приглашают в результате шапошного знакомства с одним из сотрудников. Приветливая, доброжелательная атмосфера, много русскоговорящих сотрудников, отличное и – главное - знакомое оборудование, но...На работу могут принять только при условии, если есть собственный проект, и не просто проект, но с инвестором, готовым вложить деньги. Проекты есть, целых два, а инвесторов – ни одного.

Начинаю искать инвестора. Сначала через разрекламированную общественную организацию Альянс Научно-Технических Работников. С порога объявлено, что за нахождение инвестора Альянс берет 12% от вклада, так как без них со мной все равно никто говорить не станет. С ними, впрочем, тоже никто интереса не проявил.
Параллельно ищу самостоятельно. Один проект посвящен разработке слоистой керамической брони для защитных жилетов и техники. Быстро выясняется, что подобные разработки ведутся на государственные деньги в интересах армии. Сотрудник должен иметь “security clearance”. Для ее получения эмигрант должен прожить в Канаде определенное количество лет в зависимости от страны, в которой родился. Для России это 10 лет. Не успеть мне получить этот допуск! Проект откладывается в стол.
Второй проект гораздо безобиднее. Предлагается технология переработки отходов стекла и керамики в строительные материалы. Есть лабораторная технология и образцы. Учитывая, что Торонто вывозит твердые отходы в Америку и платит за это большие дегьги, проект должен бы представлять интерес. Разослала нескольким депутатам (накануне выборов), в Институт Охраны Окружающей Среды и Министерство Экологии. Ни ответа, ни привета. На встрече с представителями этих «охранников» поймала за рукав руководителя лаборатории института, он вырвался, оставив визитную карточку и обещание прочитать проект. Прочитал, переадресовал в Оттаву, из Оттавы – на завод, который занимается переработкой отходов, на который я и раньше обращалась. Круг замкнулся.

В Торонто много художественных студий и небольших компаний, так или иначе связанных со стеклом и керамикой. Их я тоже занесла в список потенциальных рабочих мест.
Как правило, это небольшие семейные компании, большинство из которых зарабатывает даже не заказами изделий, а уроками – обучают школьников и пенсионеров простым приемам декорирования и изготовления поделок из стекла и керамики. Наемных работников практически не берут.
С одной из таких компаний у меня завязались длительные и странные отношения. Периодически ее владелец звонит мне и задает вопрос из области технологии. По вопросу я понимаю, какая примерно проблема у него возникла. Но форма вопроса всегда такова, как будто я сдаю ему экзамен. «А знаете ли Вы, что такое...?» – Знаю. – «А от чего это может быть?» Короче, консультация по полной форме. Когда я спрашиваю, не хочеи ли он взять меня на работу, хотя бы на должность консультанта, он постоянно отвечает, что у него нет на производстве никаких проблем, консультант ему без надобности, а главное, чтобы взять меня на должность консультанта, ему надо убедиться в моей компетентности. Как-то набравшись нахальства, я заявила, что мне достаточно несколько минут поговорить со специалистом в моей области, чтобы оценить его уровень компетентности. Он обиделся и не звонил месяца два. А потом позвонил снова. Так и продолжается моя платоническая, пардон, волонтерская работа.

Наконец, через два года такой интересной жизни я пришла к выводу, что пора мне переходить в статус “self-employed”, то есть работать не по найму, раз никто не нанимает, а самой по себе. Создать себе рабочее место и самой же его занять. Для таких «умников» есть специальные, причем бесплатные, курсы, на которых учат, как уклоняться..., пардон, платить меньше налогов, составлять бизнес-план и прочим премудростям.

About Web sites: This blog or Web log is a web site.

Web sites are "filing cabinets" connected to the Internet.
On Web sites, you can publish Web pages in a format called HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language).
Anyone with a computer connected to the Internet can view Web pages using programs called browsers, such as Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator.
You can also use Web sites to send and receive email over the Internet.

Creating and publishing Web pages

The easiest way to create a Web page is to use a Web-authoring tool, also called an HTML-authoring tool.
Some of the more common authoring tools are:
[v] Composer (http://wp.netscape.com/communicator/composer/v4.0/index.html) - fully integrated, web document-authoring tool, which is free and available from Netscape,
[v] FrontPage (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/FX010858021033.aspx) - the Microsoft Office Web site creation and management program, which is available for purchase from Microsoft,

These tools write the HTML code for you as you compose your page.
Using them is similar to using a word processor such as Microsoft Word.

As an alternative, you can create Web pages by writing the HTML code yourself in a text editor program such as Notepad.

Enterprise Toronto: Women’s Seminar Series: Intro to Self-Publishing

The Enterprise Toronto runs a series of seminars for businessmen and the people just considering opening their own businesses.

On November, 15th 2005 in the City Hall passed a seminar, devoted to opportunities of the independent publishing of a book by the author. Manisha Solomon, Book Publishing Project Coordinator Solotext Editorial, carried out this workshop.

The presented information was very deep and covered the advantages and disadvantages of the self-publishing methodology. All stages of this process from actually writing a book to its sale were described in details.

At the seminar were discussed questions of the copyright, choice of a publishing house, an editor, a graphic designer, opportunities of marketing, ways of promotion of the book on the market and its sales. Manisha had not remained without attention to the potential mistakes, difficulties and threats on a tough journey of a new author.

The gathered audience was not so small, and consisted of people of different ages and from different communities of Toronto interested in self-publishing. It is pleasant to note, that among potential authors and publishers were three Russian-speaking but English-listening representatives.

It was not the last seminar offered to new self-publishing authors and businessmen. It is possible to get acquainted with the program of following seminars on the Enterprise Toronto and the Solotext sites.

Организация по развитию делового предпринимательства в Торонто “Enterprise Toronto” проводит серию семинаров для предпринимателей и людей, еще только задумывающихся о своем бизнесе.

15 ноября в Сити Холле проходил семинар, посвященный возможностям самостоятельной публикации книги автором. Семинар вела Маниша Соломон (Manisha Solomon) – координатор издательства Солотекст.

Представленная информация была очень конкретной и освещала вопросы достоинств и недостатков самопубликации (self-publishing), подробно рассматривались стадии этого процесса – от собственно написания самой книги до ее продажи.

Обсуждались вопросы авторского права, выбора издательства, редактора, графического дизайна, возможностей маркетинга, способов продвижения книги на рынок и ее продажи. Не остались без внимания и возможные ошибки, трудности и опасности на пути начинающего автора.

Собравшаяся аудитория была не очень велика, но состояла из заинтересованных людей разных возрастов и из разных общин Торонто. Приятно отметить, что среди потенциальных авторов и издателей было трое русскоговорящих, но англо-слушающих представителей.
Это не последний семинар, предлагаемый начинающим авторам и бизнесменам. С программой следующих семинаров можно познакомиться на приведенных сайтах.

Заинтересованность слушателей видна и на фотографиях.

В частности, организация предлагает годичную программу наставников-менторов (Mentoring Program) женщинам, желающим вести и расширять свой бизнес. Программа включает 10-дневную сессию и персонального ментора из числа успешных предпринимательниц, с которыми можно встречаться раз в месяц для разрешения конкретных вопросов. Менторы назначаются из числа основателей, владельцев или директоров бизнесов, успешно функционирующих и развивающихся в течение многих лет. Менторы выбираются из области, близкой к бизнесу протеже, и делятся своим опытом, чтобы помочь протеже успешно развивать их собственных бизнес.

Кроме представителей этой программы, на семинаре выступили женщины-предпринимательницы, впервые в жизни написавшие, напечатавшие и успешно распространившие свои книги. При этом ни одна из них не является профессиональным литератором. Но книги вызвали интерес, так как отвечали на запросы широкой публики.

Автором одной из книг – “Health & Beauty” - является мать троих детей, описавшая свой личный опыт и обобщившая полезный опыт других в поддержании здоровья и красоты женщины. Внешность автора вполне может служить хорошей рекламой своей книге.

В книге “Women Re-Worked” автор описала опыт борьбы с болезнью и возвращения к активной жизни женщин, больных раком.

“Spiritual Journey” посвящена описанию зарубежного путешествия автора в компании с фотографом и кинодокументалистом.

Авторы с юмором поделились своими ошибками - что и как не надо делать и достижениями, представили женщину-издателя Манишу Соломон из Солотекста (Solotext::Book Producing Services for Self-Publishing Authors ) и порекомендовали спонсорскую программу (Charity Foundation).

One of the most interesting seminars at the Small Business Forum has been organized by the Women Entrepreneurs of Canada (WEC).
The WEC is a not-for-profit organization created to support of women entrepreneurs and to help them at all stages of development of the business. Forms of this help are various. The organization provides opportunities for communication with other associations, the governmental and international organizations, represents women entrepreneurs in the state and business-communities with the purpose to expand understanding of their needs, inquiries and priorities. The WEC organizes seminars and a variety of programs.
In particular, the organization offers the Mentoring Program to the women , wishing to conduct and to expand the businesses. The program includes a 10-day's session and a personal mentor from successful women entrepreneurs. It is possible to meet once a month with the mentor to discuss existing problems. Mentors are appointed from founders, owners or managers of successfully functioning enterprises and developing their achievements for many years. Mentors have businesses close to protégés’ business areas, and they share the experience to help the protégé to successfully develop their own businesses.

At the Authors' Panel (Facilitator: Lorraine Leslie) we met authors and entrepreneurs who have written, printed and successfully distributed books for the first time in their lives, and we got what it takes.

Their advices inspire us to be the authors of our own books!

Therefore none of them is a professional writer but their books have caused a lot of attention from general public.

The author of a book “Health & Beauty”, a mother of three children, described her personal experience and widespread useful knowledge of others in maintenance of health and beauty of the women. The best advertisement of the book is the author’s look.

In the book “Women Reworked” the author has described her experience of struggling against a cancer disease and returning to an active life.
TimeFinders Coaching: Life and Career Coaching for Women in Midlife Women Reworked, by Heather Resnick

Sue Kenney’s “My Camino” is devoted to the narrative of the author overseas’ travel and spiritual journey in the company of a photographer and a documentary film-maker.

Participants have shared their errors and faults with a sense of humour (What and How is not necessary to do) and achievements. They presented a publisher: Solotext.com (Book Producing Services for Self-Publishing Authors and recommended a sponsor's program (Charity Foundation).

Большой Форум для Малого Бизнеса

Раз в году в единственном месте – Metro Toronto Conventional Centre – существует редкая возможность встретиться с мэром Торонто и другими интересными людьми, послушать лекции о разных аспектах малого бизнеса, поучаствовать в тематических семинарах, поговорить со специалистами, посетить выставку и вообще узнать много нового. Кроме практической информации для малого бизнеса, можно было получить много полезной информации вообще. Форум продолжался с 8 утра до 5 вечера и даже дольше, программа была очень насыщенная. И как поется в песне, «каждый выбирает для себя...»
Что же выбрали мы, кроме приветственного обращения Дэвида Миллера и посещения выставки?
Мы посетили лекции и круглые столы «Исследование Рынка», «Старт с Самого Начала», «Продажи через Интернет», «Защита Интеллектуальной Собственности», «Деловое Общение» и многое другое.
Наиболее интересные сообщения и встречи состоялись на Женском бизнес-форуме. Куда обратиться за поддержкой, как издать и продать книгу, где искать спонсоров для начала бизнеса – преуспевшие в бизнесе женщины щедро делились своим опытом с начинающими.
На Форуме присутствовали представители государственных и городских организаций, оказывающих помощь малому бизнесу.
Большенство участников составляла молодежь, но как мы ни старались, представителей «русско-говорящего племени», к сожалению, обнаружить не смогли. При том, что среди «наших» немало безработных. А ведь основная идея форума заключалась в формуле: «Хочешь работать – создай себе рабочее место!»
