Recent years have seen remarkable progress in the development of miniature laboratories ("labs on chips"). This research field has been stimulated by the ability to carry out rapid, controllable and highly reproducible experiments on very small scales and in a highly parallelized manner.

"Labs on chips" defined new operational paradigms and paved the way for discoveries to be done in the most time-efficient and labour-saving way. In my lecture, I will show how research conducted in "labs on chips" has led to high value materials, new knowledge about the changes occurring in the environment and in cell biology, and efficient tools for medical diagnostics.

He is the co-author of Connected: The Surprising Power of Our Social Networks and How They Shape Our Lives. Key to Newcomer Success Is To Become “More Canadian”

Toronto, January 14, 2011 – Internationally Educated Professionals (IEPs) are more likely to successfully integrate into the local workforce if they focus on becoming "more Canadian." That’s the finding of a new study commissioned by the Progress Career Planning Institute (PCPI).

"We’re seeing more internationally trained professionals doing well in their chosen fields," said Silma H Roddau, President of PCPI. "They’re successful because they know how important it is to understand the Canadian culture to effectively communicate."

While most research studies focus on the experience of Internationally Educated Professionals entering the Canadian workforce, the study "Winning Strategies for IEPs Success in the Workplace: Employers’ and IEPs’ Perspectives" goes beyond this phase by exploring the integration of Internationally Educated Professionals into the Canadian workforce.

The study, which surveyed 168 Internationally Educated Professionals and 20 Toronto region employers from small, medium and large organizations within the public, private and non-profit sectors, found that the following strategies have helped Internationally Educated Professionals succeed in the workplace:

• Learning to become "more Canadian" by investing in improving language and communication skills
• Mentoring and coaching by employers to help IEPs understand the workplace and Canadian culture
• Networking with other professionals within and outside the workforce to better understand the workplace

The research is based on case studies of Internationally Educated Professionals including Dr. Nava Israel, a dietician and educator from Israel who has designed programs for Internationally Educated Professionals at Ryerson University.

"The Israeli style of communications is very blunt and simply did not work here," said Isreal. "I had to learn to become ‘more Canadian’ in the way I communicated, and it made all the difference." Israel, is one of several Internationally Educated Professionals who shared their stories of hard work, perseverance and success during the conference.

The study was released at the 8th Annual Internationally Educated Professionals Conference hosted by PCPI. The conference is designed to help Internationally Educated Professionals market themselves to prospective employers. This is the largest networking event of its kind in Canada – bringing together over 1,000 Internationally Educated Professionals, employers from over 100 countries and employment experts to share their successes and strategies in integrating Internationally Educated Professionals into Canada’s workforce.

In Toronto, roughly half of the city’s residents were born outside Canada.

"Toronto is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the world," said Michael Williams, General Manager, Economic Development, Culture and Tourism, for the City of Toronto. "That’s a huge advantage for Toronto, allowing local businesses to connect with every part of the world."

• be unable to complete their income tax and benefit return by themselves
• be unable to pay for assistance
• other criteria may apply

Description: Prepares basic income tax returns for individuals with low income

Service Details: Volunteers prepare basic income tax returns enabling individuals to file for benefits they otherwise would not receive
* Volunteers should have experience in preparing basic tax returns
* A one day training session is provided each year to volunteers

Dates: Most activity is during the tax filing season from March to the end of April.

Eligibility: Individuals with low incomes and the inability to complete their own return
* Inability to pay for assistance
* Net Income of less than $30,000 for a couple
* Have a simple tax return

Fees: Free; Organizations that offer this free service may have a donation box to assist in covering costs of supplies or to make a charitable donation.

The Canada Revenue Agency offers, through its Community Volunteer Income Tax Program, free volunteer tax training sessions to community organizations and individuals and provides volunteers with a kit of handy reference material. On behalf of the Mennonite New Life Centre and our Newcomer Advocacy Committee, we would like to invite you to participate in our community forum "Refusing to Settle for Less: Newcomer Policy Recommendations to Overcome Poverty". This forum will be held on Saturday March 27th, 2010 from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm in our meeting space at 1774 Queen Street East.

As you know, the Mennonite New Life Centre is a vibrant, multicultural settlement agency for newcomers, with a vision for a city and province where people from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds participate fully in the social, economic and political life of Toronto and Ontario.

During the forum, we hope to engage a wide variety of stakeholders in dialogue regarding newcomer employment challenges and policy proposals, and to identify new ways of working together so that newcomers might contribute their skills and their ideas to this country. To facilitate this dialogue and action planning, we are planning four roundtable discussions around the themes of access to employment and political voice for newcomers:

1. Employment Equity Legislation: a proposal to ensure equitable representation of diverse groups in the workplace.
2. Paid Internships: an employer incentive strategy.
3. Upcoming Municipal and Provincial Elections: opportunities and challenges for newcomer civic participation.
4. Community organizing experiences: learning from grassroots newcomer initiatives

Your participation is key to the success of this forum. We look forward to hearing your experiences, ideas and proposals for improving access to fair and meaningful employment for newcomers and building strong and inclusive communities where immigrants and refugees participate fully in civic life. Soap Making Project

We've spent one day in our lives to making our own soaps. Exploring the art of handmade soap making, we went through several steps to get the soap ready:

Step 1: Soap Making Project: Our equipment, ingredients and understanding of the golden rules of soap making at home
(digital kitchen balance scale, plastic and metal containers, oils, sodium hydroxide, wooden stick, hand mixer, small saucepan, forms, fragrances, rubber gloves)

Step 2-1: Soap Making Project: Oil mix weighting
(coconut oil, olive oil, grape seed oil, sesame oil and whatever you want to add)

Step2-2: Soap Making Project: Oil mix weighting
(use 10% more oil mix solution than it needs for the reaction)

Step 3: Soap Making Project: Preparing sodium hydroxide solution
(adding sodium hydroxide to water, placing a plastic container in snow to cool it down)

Step4: Soap Making Project: Melting oil mix in a water bath ( small saucepan)

Step 5-1: Soap Making Project: Combining oil mix with sodium hydroxide solution

Step 5-2: Soap Making Project: Mixing soap with a wooden stick

Step 5-3: Soap Making Project: Step 5-3 Mixing soap with a hand mixer
( may add fragrance and additional ingredients)

Step 6: Soap Making Project: Preparation of soap making forms

Step 7: Soap Making Project: Soap forming time to pouring the mixture into the forms

Is light a wave or a particle? After many centuries of debate, involving giants as Newton, Hughyens, Young, Fresnel, Maxwell, Einstein, the final answer of quantum mechanics is: “light is both a wave and a particle”.

Wave-particle duality is at the root of the quantum revolution initiated at the beginning of the 20th century, but explaining it is a difficult challenge. Most textbooks on quantum physics start with a description of an “experiment” to demonstrate it - an experiment that was not actually realized with photons before 1985. An even more fascinating version of that “thought experiment” – the “delayed-choice experiment” proposed by J.A. Wheeler - has recently been turned into a real experiment as well. We will present that experiment, which, in the words of Richard Feynman, stresses one of the big "quantum mysteries."

Women and Trades in the Green Economy

I am sure there has been much discussion on the topic "How Women can fill the gap in the field of trades". Most definitely, industry forecasters acknowledge the current and ever growing the trade shortage. And, yes, it has been mentioned many times that more than half of Ontario’s skilled trades people will retire in the next 5 years and 4 out of every 10 businesses that depend on skilled trades are expected to face a labour shortage.

So, I ask the question: "Are you a woman looking at future jobs in trades?" Then, I would recommend you to research such occupations that embrace "the green economy". There is now a strong movement toward creating environmentally sustainable energy sources. With our current global financial crisis, it is even more crucial to be green! The colour "green" will pave the way for plentiful future jobs in trades.

For example, in the field of trades, the green movement will open up a lot of jobs for electricians, iron and steel workers, construction workers, and sheet metal workers. Construction workers in our greening economy will be able to get jobs retrofitting homes to make them more efficient. The biggest support for renovation and revitalization of construction jobs is the federal government offering a rebate for renovation, particularly with the emphasis on eco-retrofitters i.e. bumping up insulation, new tankless water heaters, etc… These two initiatives will offer more federal and provincial incentives for people to "go green".

Yes, indeed, money spent on retrofitting homes, and buildings will be a major economic driver for job development in the green economy. Some of the future plans for this green movement will include renewable energy tariffs, renewable energy goals for utilities /targets and the restrictions, and eventually the dissemination of new carbon emitting projects. All of these key objectives will push the government to develop more wind, solar and geothermal technology.

"Solar", "wind" and "sustainable energy solutions" are the hot words for the 21st century. As such, jobs in trades and professions will increase for water treatment; installation of solar energy systems i.e. installation of solar water heaters, reforestation, and cleaning up contaminated sites. Yes, indeed, the future of women in trades and in the green economy looks favorable.
